Common IP Questions

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique number assigned to your device on the internet. Your public IP is what websites and servers see when you connect. It identifies your general location and ISP. Your home network also has private IP addresses (like 192.168.x.x) used internally by your router.
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42 — 32-bit numbers supporting ~4.3 billion addresses (now exhausted). IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::1 — 128-bit numbers supporting a virtually unlimited number of devices. Most internet traffic still uses IPv4, but IPv6 is growing as the successor protocol.
Your public IP is assigned by your ISP and is visible to the internet — it's what this page shows. Your private IP is assigned by your router and is only visible within your home network (usually 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x). All devices on your Wi-Fi share the same public IP but have different private IPs.
Most home broadband connections use dynamic IPs — your ISP can change your IP address periodically or when you reboot your router. Static IPs never change and are typically purchased as an add-on from your ISP, used for hosting servers or remote access. If your IP changes every day, it's dynamic.
IP geolocation can identify your city and ISP, but it is not precise. IP databases typically locate you within 10–50 miles of your actual location. Your exact street address cannot be determined from your IP without a court order to your ISP. Using a VPN changes your visible IP to one in the VPN server's location.
Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) — this routes your traffic through a server in another location, hiding your real IP. Tor Browser routes through multiple relays for stronger anonymity. HTTPS proxies work for browsers only. Note: VPNs and proxies do not make you completely anonymous; they shift which entity can see your traffic.
